Getting started

Last updated:

Just thinking about studying in the Netherlands? Here are some simple steps that can help you figure out what you want.

  1. Study program
Unlike in other countries, most universities don’t differ that much from each other. Programs are often the same and “ratings” are not based on prestige but student welfare. There is one distinction you should look at first: University (WO) vs University of Applied Sciences (HBO). Find out more here.
To find an English-taught program, take a look at this website that lists all programs: https://www.studyinnl.org/dutch-education/studies
Read through the program page, the curriculum, and figure out what interests you. Also note that “Publicly funded” universities cost way less than private ones for EU/EEA students.
  2. Can I afford to study here?
Not only do you have to pay tuition fees, but you also have to pay for housing, which can be expensive, ranging from 300-1000 EUR per month in less popular areas to 800-2000 EUR per month in Amsterdam. Calculate in additional costs for transport, municipality taxes, and, of course, food. Check out our finances section to find more insights.
  3. Let’s apply!
Ready to do this? Applications usually open the October for the September intake and close anywhere between April and August. Check out this article for more information.
  4. Find housing!
As previously mentioned, finding housing can be a nightmare in this country. Start early and be aware of your budget well in advance.
  5. About to arrive
Yay! I am sure you can’t wait to start this new chapter in your life. Don’t forget to make sure your visa and residence permit are being processed (non-EU/EEA). You can usually schedule an appointment to register at the municipality to get your BSN already in advance (also EU/EEA!). Think about how you get to your city and what you need to buy in the first week.
